چکیده

We present the cumulative frequency-area distribution of tropical cumulus clouds as observed from satellite and space shuttle images from scales of 0.1 to 1000 km. The distribution is a power-law function of area with exponent 20.8. We show that this result and the fractal dimension of cloud perimeters implies that the top of the convective boundary layer (CBL) is a self-affine interface with roughness exponent or Hausdorff measure H ø 0.4, the same value as that of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in 2 1 1 dimensions. In addition, we identify dynamic scaling in a time series of the local altitude of the top of the CBL as measured with FMyCW radar backscatter intensity. A possible growth model is discussed. Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model for the fractal structure of cumulus cloud fields

We model the ascent of warm, moist air in the Earth’s atmosphere by turbulent convection and expansion with the KPZ equation, familiar in the physics literature on surface growth. Clouds form in domains where the interface between the rising air and its surrounding air achieves an elevation higher than that necessary for condensation. The model predictions are consistent with the perimeter frac...

Exact results for the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang equation with spatially correlated noise

We investigate the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) equation in d spatial dimensions with Gaussian spatially long–range correlated noise — characterized by its second moment R(x−x) ∝ |x−x| — by means of dynamic field theory and the renormalization group. Using a stochastic Cole–Hopf transformation we derive exact exponents and scaling functions for the roughening transition and the smooth phase above ...

A probabilistic bulk model of coupled mixed layer and convection. Part II: Shallow convection case

The probabilistic bulk convection model (PBCM) developed in a companion paper is here extended to shallow nonprecipitating convection. The PBCMunifies the clear-sky and shallow convection boundary layer regimes by obtaining mixed-layer growth, cloud fraction, and convective inhibition from a single parameterization based on physical principles. The evolution of the shallow convection PBCM is ba...

Universal fluctuation of the average height in the early-time regime of the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang-type growth

The statistics of the average height fluctuation of the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang(KPZ)-type surface is investigated. Guided by the idea of local stationarity, we derive the scaling form of the characteristic function in the early-time regime, t ≪ N with t time and N the system size, from the known characteristic function in the stationary state (t ≫ N) of the single-step model derivab...
